Although most of the year I am dedicated to landscape and natural world photography, I have a profound love of the colors and mood created by Kimono fashion in Japan, particularly during the Seijin Shiki and Shichi-Go-San traditions. Every year I do a limited number of Seijin Shiki and Shichigosan photo sessions. Because I do not actively advertise this except for through chance meetings and now here on my website. I generally have about 5 openings for those wanting a western artists feeling to their traditional photo sessions. Although I have great respect for the artistry of many photographers in Japan, I often feel Kimono photography captures a limited range of dynamics with soft glowing over exposed images. My aim is not to compete with this well established beautiful pure feeling of imagery, but to offer a more dynamic alternative for those wanting to remember the true emotion of the day and not only the same image as everyone else. I believe I have a deep sense of personal expression and as my second job in Japan is teaching English, mostly to children from ages 3 to 20 years old. I also am able to connect quickly with youth and help them relax and be themselves in front of the camera, allowing me to capture timeless memories for you and your family while showing the true spirit of your child.

For Foreigners wishing to have portrait sessions in Kimono, I do offer this service, however advanced notice and deposit are required. I can discuss with you in more detail upon request, but to put this simply I am not interested in photo sessions with Kimono from the tourist shops that fit people quickly in mediocre Kimono. The Kimono must be of high quality, and the fitting and hair must be done properly. I can assist in arranging Kimono rental or purchase after a deposit is made. The reason for my strict standards is to ensure the images captured are of the highest quality. Materials mater in how light is captured and reflected, and cheap Kimono and sub par fitting will degrade the images greatly. It is not my intention to exclude anyone, it is simply that I only do a handful of Kimono portrait sessions per year, and I do it for love of the art.
